Particle size is one part of the skin-delivery story
A review of lipid nanosystems highlights interacting formulation and skin-barrier factors.
What the review covers
The 2023 Pharmaceutics review, “Current Advances in Lipid Nanosystems Intended for Topical and Transdermal Drug Delivery Applications,” considers skin structure, nanoparticle penetration routes and factors affecting delivery. Its abstract identifies particle size, surface charge and formulation components among the variables that need to be understood and controlled.
Avoid a universal size rule
HMC’s LinkedIn discussion uses particle size to explore possible delivery routes. The editorial takeaway is more qualified: a size measurement on its own does not establish where a formulation will travel or how much active substance will be delivered. Skin condition, carrier composition and the distinction between topical and transdermal delivery matter.
Make the endpoint explicit
A research plan should distinguish material retained at the surface, deposited in a follicle, delivered into skin, and transported across it. These are different outcomes. Evidence for one should not silently become a claim for another.
