Nationwide real-world implementation of AI for cancer detection in population-based mammography screening
A large prospective implementation study examines AI-supported mammography in routine screening.
What the paper explores
PRAIM compared AI-supported double reading with standard double reading in organized mammography screening at multiple German sites. The study evaluated cancer detection and recall measures in actual clinical operations, extending the discussion beyond retrospective image classification.
How to interpret the evidence
Radiologists chose whether to use AI, so the observational design leaves room for selection and confounding. Improved screening metrics do not by themselves establish a reduction in mortality.
Questions for MedTech teams
Real-world evaluation should account for deployment choices, site variation and the clinical pathway, with outcomes selected for the intended use.
