Next-Generation Multitarget Stool DNA Test for Colorectal Cancer Screening
A prospective stool-DNA study makes sensitivity and specificity tradeoffs visible.
What the paper explores
The BLUE-C study evaluated a next-generation multitarget stool DNA test in asymptomatic adults undergoing screening colonoscopy. It compared performance with a fecal immunochemical test. The DNA-based test showed higher sensitivity for cancer and advanced precancerous lesions while having lower specificity.
How to interpret the evidence
A diagnostic accuracy comparison does not establish every downstream clinical benefit or the best strategy for each person. The tradeoff must be interpreted within the intended screening pathway.
Questions for MedTech teams
Plan comparative endpoints and how false positives and false negatives will be interpreted. A useful performance claim should present both detection and exclusion of disease.
